Wild Things at Ballyvolane House: A Guided Biodiversity Walk Through Gardens, Woods & Lakes

Justin Green will host a guided walk through the gardens, woods and estate at Ballyvolane House as part of National Biodiversity Week. The tour will explore the estate’s rich natural habitats, including woodlands, lakes, birdlife, pollinators, amphibians and Ballyvolane’s much-loved red squirrels.

Ballyvolane House - winner of the Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh / Intangible Cultural Heritage Award

National Heritage Week Awards 2025

Ballyvolane House has been named the winner of the Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh / Intangible Cultural Heritage Award at the National Heritage Week Awards 2025, held at the Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham, Dublin on 17th October.

The award celebrates outstanding projects that promote and preserve Ireland’s living traditions and cultural heritage. Ballyvolane House was honoured for its event “Celebrating Irish Road Bowling at Ballyvolane House”, held during National Heritage Week 2025.

Join us on Friday, 5th September 2025 for a unique, immersive food experience in the glorious surrounds of Ballyvolane House, as part of the Feast - East Cork Festival of Food 2025.

Begin your day with a guided walk and forage through the gardens, woodlands, and wild edges of the estate with owner Justin Green and foraging expert Andrew Malcolm, discovering the abundance of wild herbs, leaves, and late summer edibles that grow on the estate.

Then gather for an outdoor long-table lunch in the walled-garden, where Eamo & Ró, Chef-Patrons of Eamo & Ró Café & Larder (and now leading all wedding and event catering at Ballyvolane House) will prepare a fire-cooked feast using seasonal estate-grown produce, foraged finds, and the best ingredients from local East Cork farmers, cheesemakers, and fishermen.

Celebrating Irish Road Bowling at Ballyvolane House - National Heritage Week 2025

We are delighted to announce a very special event taking place at Ballyvolane House as part of National Heritage Week 2025, which runs from 16th–24th August. This year’s theme, “Exploring Our Foundations,” invites us to reflect on the deep roots of Irish culture—and what better way to do that than by celebrating one of our most unique and enduring traditions: Irish Road Bowling.

Join us on Tuesday, 19th August, for an afternoon devoted to this historic sport, which has strong ties to north-east Cork and the surrounding countryside.

We are honoured to welcome Dr. Séamus Ó’Tuama of the Irish Road Bowling Association, who will deliver a fascinating talk exploring the history, origins, and cultural significance of the sport—particularly its deep connection to the communities of this region.
