John and Sally McKenna’s Guides
We are proud and delighted to have been awarded the The McKennas’ Guide Best in Ireland 2021 plaque. The McKenna’s plaque is one of the most respected badge of merit in Irish contemporary food and hospitality. John and Sally have championed the best of Irish food and hospitality to their wide audience for over thirty years and have published numerous books. The McKennas’ books bring you straight to the heart and soul of Ireland, with the latest book ‘MILK’ celebrating Ireland’s culinary treasure, out now. We have a copy and it’s fantastic. Milk is close to our hearts as we operated a diary farm here at Ballyvolane House in the 1980’s and we are now distilling Berthas’ Revenge Gin from milk whey in one of the old cow sheds in the farm yard. Ballyvolane also translates from Gaelic as “the place of springing heifers”.

The Telegraph ‘Sweet (hotel) dreams are made of these: our hotel reviewers imagine the places they’d most like to stay’ by Fiona Duncan and friends
Stunning views, hammocks and caipirinhas to hand… Fiona Duncan and friends imagine the places they’d most like to review.
We are delighted that Ballyvolane House got a couple of lovely mentions in Fiona Duncan’s article in The Telegraph Travel about what her dream hotel would look like. Thank you Fiona!
“The key attribute for my dream hotel is “generosity of spirit” and so there will be complimentary newspapers, homemade cakes oozing with cream for tea, and an imaginative honesty bar, preferably including the hotel’s own liqueurs and gin (such as Bertha’s Revenge at Ballyvolane House).”
“The food (nothing fancy; save me from tasting menus) will be an array of home-cooked local dishes, laid out on the flat-topped stove top as at Ibitipoca. Feasts shared with other guests at Coombeshead Farm and Ballyvolane House also bubble into my mind, as well as a particular dish of freshly picked alexanders at Gurnard’s Head, of salsify gratin at the Pheasant in Harome, of wild mushrooms at Hambleton Hall and of lobster, prepared at the table as if by magic by Diego Masciaga at the Waterside Inn.”

Bertha’s Revenge Navy Strength
We are delighted to introduce you to a new nautical member of Justin & Antony’s little herd Bertha’s Revenge Navy Strength Gin. They have raised the ABV to a lip-pursing 57.1%, and have shuffled the botanical blend slightly to accentuate one or two of the more pronounced flavour notes. The extra strength gives our merry crew of spices a megaphone through which to convey their message, which is as smooth and as well-balanced as you would expect from a cow riding at anchor.

‘How the stars aligned for one Cork couple’s stunning Christmas lockdown wedding’ by Rebecca Laffin writing for Cork Beo
Aoife O’Connell Walsh and James Walsh said “I do” in a gorgeous ceremony on December 28th in a rustic-chic barn on the ground of Ballyvolane House with just 17 close family members present.
“Ballyvolane was incredible,” Aoife said. “We were looking for somewhere that was different, somewhere that wasn’t your typical wedding venue”.
Thank you Aoife and James for having chosen BH as the location for your wedding. We really enjoyed having you all here. Huge congratulations and best wishes for the future.
